SEO Link Building

Increase the popularity of your website with the search engines and other websites to bring in more qualified traffic. Understanding what SEO link building is and how to use it in your online home business is essential.

Creating links for your website involves a lot of time and patience.  Links IN are used to increase the popularity of the site and to generate more qualified traffic.  Linking strategies are used because the search engines look at your site in terms of the amount and quality of the other websites connected to you.  The search engines favor those websites that have a lot of highly relevant links and as a result these move higher up the rankings. But more importantly, each link means more visitors to your website, particularly if the link is on a popular website.

Yet it isn’t as simple as that, the search engines change the rules all the time in an attempt to minimize link popularity abuse.  What worked once doesn’t always work in the long term, so don’t try to short-cut the system, because eventually you will get picked up and booted off the engine.

The best rule is to follow the basic guidelines that have been proven to work time and time again.  It will take time to build a list of excellent links and the search engines will repay you by giving you a higher ranking.

There are two main types of SEO link building strategies – internal links, those from within your site and those linking into your site. The second is external links – those that you link to others with.

SEO link building Strategy #1 – Internal Links

  • Internal Linking - Your Tier 1 page is your home page, your home page is linked to your Tier 2 pages that are your general topic pages which form the major heading pages of your site.  They link to your Tier 3 pages which are your information pages.  These Tier 3 pages link to external websites such as your affiliates, partners, paid advertising and related websites.  Occasionally your Tier 2 pages link to external sites.

All your internal links connect to other pages within your website.  Internal links are very important because they determine how you are to be indexed with the search engines and overall how effective your site appears to your customer.

If internal linking is incorrectly set-up it can it have a big impact on rankings and link popularity, as crawlers searching your site will stop spidering through if your site becomes unrelated and difficult to navigate.  The result will be that your are ranked much lower than those sites with well linked pages with relevant link titles.

Internal Link Strategies

  1. Focus on developing high quality content before you even think about search engine optimization
  2. Use the same keyword that forms your meta tags and content to create your link description
  3. Be sure to give appropriate names to your internal links so they match your page titles
  4. Link to sites with high page ranking, that are related to your subject – avoid those that aren’t
  5. Make sure every link you have is an opportunity to enrich your customer and earn you money

SEO link building strategy #2 – External Links

  • External Linking – Also known as reciprocal link exchanging and one-way links.  They are slightly different in nature as a reciprocal link means you’re accepting another sites link in exchange for yours and of course a one-way link means exactly that, from either yourself or another website.

External links should never be put on either your home page, Tier 1 pages, or rarely on your Tier 2 pages.  It’s always better to find sites that offer a high website ranking for your particular keywords, sites that are complementary to you.  Try to get them to link to you with a one way if possible – putting only your link on their site.  That would be the ideal outcome.

Using the Google tool bar in your browser can show you Google Page Rank (PR) a rating system Google uses to demonstrate the link popularity of a particular page.  PR is allocated to every page that you view online from 0 – not popular to 10 – the most popular.  A PR5+ would be a good site to link to indeed. Alexa is another tool you can run to find out how to measure the ranking of other people’s websites.  Alexa is a little more detailed as you’re able to view all the links for each page and how it relates to the rest of the website.

If you can’t do it that way offer a reciprocal link – they will put your link on their site and you on theirs.

If they are very well ranked and they won’t do a one-way link or a reciprocal link, it could be worth paying cash and buy the link from them.  The general idea is to find very popular websites that relate to your industry and link to them.

Google will come along and say ‘Hey, these people must be good, if they are linked to such a popular site’ and up your rankings will go.

External Linking Strategies

  1. Make sure the site has fewer then 40 other links on the page
  2. Links coming ‘in’ from external websites should contain your primary keyword or your websites name
  3. Make sure their website is indexed with Google
  4. Ensure that links ‘out’ go to a page that is highly related to your keywords.  Ask to have a look if you have to.

Linking to popular, high quality sites that are favored by the search engines is the number one aim of any business in the game of linking and improving search engine rankings.  Remember play by the rules and only link to quality related sites, those with high page ranks.  You’ll be much better off in the long term.

The job of doing it yourself can take thousands of hours and a lot of searching for related websites.  If you want to automate the reciprocal link process and make it faster and easier, I suggest working with a software program that hunts out possible partners for you to link with.  I recently started using Arelis by Axandra, an excellent tool for search engine optimization.  What I love about this program is that it gives me everything I need to run and promote my site.  I recommend you to get high PR links (PR5,6 and 7) from my team, but of course I’m biased.

Be warned by using software you can be abuse by making it send out lots of unsolicited email which is considered spamming and this is to be avoid at all costs.  If you follow the manual and play by the rules, this tool is a great way of halving your time and saving you money.  Just don’t become a malicious spammer!
