If you enjoy working with people then an online MLM business might be a good business for you. Warning – there is a high failure rate.

MLM or Network marketing is a business system in which a group of buyers, collectively purchase and recruit other members to expand it’s network and increase it’s purchasing power.  Some networks represent a single brand name and others form a virtual shopping center with a variety of brands.

There are many people who generate a large incomes through these systems.  They make it either by commission on each item their recruited members purchase or by selling the products at retail price.  As a network member they purchase the products at wholesale prices.  People most commonly go down the path of building the business and thus increasing their network members, while others will simply sell the products gaining their income from the margins.

It’s very easy to get started as the buying groups are always looking for new members.  They gain a small commission for you joining and purchasing so they will tend to be very excited to have you join.

I’ve been involved in several multi-level marketing businesses, particularly when I ran my marketing company.  I received a lot of phone calls and visits from friendly faced strangers asking me if I’ve ‘Ever looked at other ways of making money?’  My reply was invariably, ‘Of course!’  I never knew what the ‘opportunity’ was until several meetings later.  This may sound all-too-familiar to you and it was the most frustrating thing about this type of business.

However, some of them offer fantastic products and it’s a great way to meet likeminded entrepreneurs.  If your interest is peaked, I suggest you find out about the time and money commitments required first, before diving in and getting started.  There can be a very high failure rate and you need to pick your sponsor carefully, as they will guide you and train you to success.  I worked very hard when I was in my first MLM, but I only built a small team.

After observing successful MLM operators there seemed to be certain traits that the ‘top’ performers all possessed, regardless of which MLM it was:

• They had a crystal clear vision of what they wanted to achieve and when they wanted to achieve it.
• They were commonly a married couple of many years.
• They had been in the business longer then 12 months before they started to see any results.
• Many of them came from professional business backgrounds – they already knew a lot of people.
• They where all extremely focused and unrelenting – food and drink didn’t seem to exist sometimes - they were always out looking for another member.

The downside to MLM marketing is that it can irritate people around you, especially if they aren’t at all interested in business.

MLM’s are best presented to people who are new to business or are in a business they don’t enjoy and open to new opportunities.

I don’t regret being involved in several MLM’s.  They teach invaluable skills about business management, financial management, communicating with people and persistence.

If you are interested in starting in an MLM business, I recommend reading several books on the topic first.  Look for books that clearly explains how to succeed in any MLM.  I was originally given several books by my ‘Up-line’ – MLM jargon for the person that recruited me, that helped me considerably.

I used them as my business bibles and it helped me build my second online MLM business team to over two hundred members!  This team is still around and growing today and I still get monthly cheques for all their hard work. Mind you, the returns are not great. I spend maybe 1 hour a month working with them. I highly recommended that you read around 2-3 books on the topic if you want to build any MLM business. There are some books around that are great, just find those with the highest rating from multiple readers. Try getting some books on Network marketing from Amazon.
